Prostate cancer is a disease in which cells of the prostate become abnormal and start to grow uncontrollably, forming tumors.
Prostate cancer is a malignancy of one of the major male sex glands. Along with the testicles and the seminal vesicles, the prostate secretes the fluid that makes up semen. The prostate is about the size of a walnut and lies just behind the urinary bladder. A tumor in the prostate interferes with proper control of the bladder and normal sexual functioning. Often the first symptom of prostate cancer is difficulty in urinating. However, because a very common, non-cancerous condition of the prostate, benign pro static hyperplasia (BPH), also causes the same problem, difficulty in urination is not necessarily due to cancer. Cancerous cells within the prostate itself are generally not deadly on their own. However, as the tumor grows, some of the cells break off and spread to other parts of the body through the lymph or the blood, a process known as metastasis. The most common sites for prostate cancer to metastasize are the seminal vesicles, the lymph nodes, the lungs, and various bones around the hips and the pelvic region. The effects of these new tumors are what can cause death.
Second only to skin cancer, the American Cancer Society estimates that in 2000 at least 180,400 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed. Of this number, the disease will cause at least 31,900 deaths. Although prostate cancer is often very slow growing, it can be aggressive, especially in younger men. Given its slow growing nature, many men with the disease die of other causes rather than from the cancer itself. Prostate cancer affects African-American men twice as often as white men and the mortality rate among African-Americans is also two times higher. African-Americans have the highest rate of prostate cancer of any world population group.
As the most common type of cancer in men over 50 and the second most prevalent form of the disease overall in men, some 35,000 males die from prostate cancer in the United States every year, while another 165,000 suffer with the disease.
Only men get prostate cancer and most cases occur in males over 50. But, in recent years there has been a rise in the number of younger men in their 30s and 40s developing problems and requiring prostate cancer treatments. This is thought to be the result of poor diet and lifestyle as well as an increase in environmental pollutants.
Prostate cancer is also more prevalent in certain groups. It is particularly common among male African-Americans, who have a 40 percent higher risk of developing the disease.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms of prostate cancer include blood in the urine; pain in the area of the prostate gland, genitalia, and lower back; prostate enlargement (BPH); difficulty urinating; extreme fatigue; and unexplained weight loss.

As there are different forms of the disease, prostate cancer treatments vary greatly depending on the severity of the illness, how advanced it is, and the age of the sufferer.
Especially in older men, treatment may not be necessary — since in 80 percent of prostate cancer cases, the disease is slow growing and does not spread beyond the prostate gland itself, thus causing few, if any, problems. Therefore, for men aged 70 or over, if the prostate cancer is localized then many doctors will simply “watch” the patient and the disease rather than prescribing aggressive prostate cancer treatments.
But when prostate cancer is diagnosed in younger men, or the disease is meta sized and shows signs of spreading into other parts of the body, many doctors prescribe aggressive prostate cancer treatments which can cause serious side effects without guaranteeing that the cancer will be cured and not return at a later stage.
These include chemotherapy, radiation, surgical removal of the prostate gland (radical prostatectomy), internal seed radiation (in which radioactive seeds are surgically implanted into the prostate gland), synthetic hormone therapy, and cryosurgery, which literally freezes both the prostate gland and the cancer cells it contains.
